● ABOUT THE VIRGINIA CITY AND TRUCKEE RAILROAD:

The Original Virginia & Truckee Railroad:

The Virginia and Truckee Railroad is one of the most famous short lines in American history.

It wasincorporated on March 5, 1868, by the “Bank Crowd” to serve the mines of the Comstock.

● When did the railroad come to Virginia City, Nevada? 1869

● The Virginia & Truckee Railroad was built between 1868 and 1872 to connect the mining and milling communities of the COMSTOCK LODE to the Central Pacific Railroad that ran through Reno.

The line first connected Virginia City to Carson City in 1869, but work to run the railroad north moved quickly.

● The Virginia & Truckee Railroad is the most famous of all American Short Line railroads.

Construction began in 1869, and in the ensuing 74 years, the busy mountain railroad hauled millions of dollars ingold and silver orefrom the mines deep below Virginia City.

● ABOUT VIRGINIA CITY, NEVADA:

● Virginia City, Nevada, developed as a boomtown with the 1859 discovery of the COMSTOCK LODE, the FIRST MAJOR SILVER DEPOSIT DISCOVERY IN THE UNITED STATES, with numerous mines opening.

The population of VIRGINIA CITY peaked in the MID 1870s, with an estimated 25,000 residents.

● The 19th-century mining bonanza that turned Virginia City into the most important industrial city between Denver and San Francisco, was the result of the COMSTOCK LODE.

●A rich deposit of silver ore discovered by Henry Comstock, part-owner of the property on which it was discovered, in June 1859. Getting his nickname for only making pancakes for breakfast, Henry T. “Pancake” Comstock was referred to as one of the original finders of gold in Gold Canyon, just south of Virginia City.

Comstock was said to have been lazy, employing American Indians on his claims, and was a fast-talker.

Since he was on the scene of the original findings, his name stuck almost instantly.
