This is a lovely andFine Antique Old Dutch East Indies Asian Impressionist Fauve Portrait Oil Painting on canvas, by the seldomly seen early 20th century Dutch - Indonesian painter, Leendert Cornelis Hendrikus "Bill" Vreugdenhil (1891 - 1976.) This artwork depicts a beautiful Impressionistic and Fauve inspired portrait of an un-clothed young Balinese woman, carrying a bowl of fruits above her head, and wading through highly stylized river waters. She stares straight ahead of her path, with a sense of uncertainty and pensiveness. This piece clearly takes inspiration from the late 19th century Fauvist portrait paintings of Tahitian women by Paul Gaugin (1848 - 1903.) Signed and dated: "Bill Vreugdenhil '38" in the lower right corner. Additionally, this piece is titled, annotated, and signed on the verso of the canvas: "Djempol (Bali)...Bill Vreugdenhil 1938." Approximately 25 1/2 x 31 1/4 inches. Good condition for nearly a century of age and storage, with some light dimpling to the canvas, mild edge wear, and some light scuffing throughout (please see photos.) Vreugdenhil's original paintings are very scarce, and have only appeared for sale once before, in theZeeuws Veilinghuis Zeeland saleeers "Indonesian Art" sale, Netherlands, 2014. Priced to Sell.
