This drawing is included in his book L’ARMEE FRANCAISE An Illustrated History of the French Army 1790-1885 page 246.

This is an original pen and ink drawing by Edouard Detaille. Black ink, brown and grey washes, graphite, and some highlighting on a medium weight tan woven paper. Signed and dated in black ink at lower left: Edouard Detaille 1887. Dedicated in faded ink at lower right: ‘A mona mi, G. DE Dramard/bien cordialement/ Edouard Detaille.’

Detaille enlisted in the 8th Mobile Battalion of theFrench Armywhen theFranco-Prussian Warbrokeout in 1870; by November he was seeing and experiencing the realities of war.This experience allowed him to produce his famedportraitsof soldiers and historically accurate depictions of militarymaneuvers,uniforms, and military life in general. He eventually became the official painter ofthebattles. He published a book calledL\'Armée Françaisein 1885, which containsover 300-line drawings and 20 color reproductions of his works.

L\'Armée Françaisein 1885 was previously published under the title L\'Armée Française– Types of Uniforms, by Boussod, Valadonand Company at Asni’eres-sur-Seine 1885-1889. The original drawings including this drawing ‘Battery in Front of Sebastopol. Opening fire.’ were composed and executed by Detaille from 1883-1888.
