Up for your consideration is a Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Type 3 Medal, which is famous due to it\'s similarity to the Medal of Honor (MOH), which was instituted during the US Civil War. This version of the GAR medal is similar to the MOH not only in the overall general design but most especially due to the upward position of the wings of the eagle of the hanger. Another distinctive feature of this version of the type 3 GAR medal is the inscribed patent date that at the bottom of the reverse of the star of the medal. The type 3GAR medal is about half the size of an actual Medal of Honor.
This design was one of the first designs of the GAR medal and is one of the rarer types of GAR medals; this medal is especially prized due to it\'s similarity to the MOH.
The GAR medals are famous for being made from captured Confederate cannons.
