This is an exceptionally nice, old, unmarked Bona Allen saddle. It is completely tooled with a basketweave design, and the leather is very nice all over. It is double skirted, with rounded corners, allowing it to fit nicely on the shorter backed horse as well as the longer backed. It is a typical standard Bona Allen design.
The tree and horn are tight. The fleece is real lambskin, and is largely present, with a few loose tufts here and there. The pommel has a huge, very wide swell, and is cut under in the old design. The seat measures 15 inches from the base of the horn to the center of the cantle.
The stirrup leathers are excellent, and lace to adjust. They may have been replaced, they just seem very good for their age. It would be very easy to switch these over to Blevins buckles for easier adjustment.
The gullet measures 6 inches, which is wide for this period. The cantle is fairly high, and the seat is slick...non the less, very comfortable. The cinch rings and rigging are excellent. The cinch rings themselves are completely bound in leather, which is in very good condition.
The saddle is a vintage model, but shows a very moderate amount of wear for a saddle of its age. The latigo strings are all good, and the saddle is ready to sit on a horse, and go back to use.
