16mm Film TOOLBOX MURDERS (1978) UNCUT Grindhouse Cult Horror Classic EXC Print:
$955

On the sale block is an ultra-rare, excellent, UNCUT 16mm original print of one of the grimmest horror films ever made, THE TOOLBOX MURDERS (1978) starring Cameron Mitchell, Pamelyn Ferdin, Wesley Eure, Nicolas Beauvy, Tim Donnelly, and Aneta Corsaut.

There were a lot of shocking movies to hit the Grindhouse and Drive-in circuits during the 1970s, but many of those seem pale in comparison to THE TOOLBOX MURDERS.This film is filled with a plethora of intensely disturbing moments and graphic, shocking images.Girls in an apartment complex are being killed by a looney-tunes psycho with a toolbox full of murderous toys. Before killing them, the maniac calmly walks around humming religious tunes like “Bringing in the Sheaves.” He drills them, he hammers them, he shoots nails into them…brrrr!

Mitchell plays the apartment complex manager who has lost his daughter in a car wreck. It soon becomes obvious he’s the killer. Two teenage boys set out to solve the mystery. In fact, there’s about a twenty-minute stretch where you’d swear you were watching THE HARDY BOYS MEET THE PSYCHO KILLER.If you squint a little it’s easy to imagine you’re watching Shaun Cassidy and Parker Stevenson, whose Hardy Boys TV show was at the zenith of its popularity when this film was made. One of the teenagers (Wesley Eure) is Mitchell’s nephew and turns out to be as crazy as his uncle. In a truly shocking scene, he soaks his buddy in gasoline and sets him on fire.Whoa! There are other moments even more horrifying.Mitchell’s first victim gets it with a power drill.Other atrocities soon follow.

But the most ghastly moment is the bathtub masturbation/murder scene involving a fully naked, incredibly beautiful brunette. This will leave your eyes bulging in horror and your jaw on the floor. But while it would have been easy for director Dennis Donnelly to just parade through a series of ghoulish killings, he stops down in the second half of the film to explore the inside mind of his killer. The scenes with Mitchell and Pamelyn Ferdin (the teenage girl he has kidnapped and tied to his dead daughter’s bed) display a depth of acting we didn’t know Cameron Mitchell had.His softly maniacal ravings are so chilling you’ll want to cover your ears and go, “la, la, la, la, la!” to drown out the hideousness of it all.As unsettling as it is, this is possibly the best performance of Mitchell’s career.

What’s even more horrifying, though, is that in the following year (1979) two real life psychos in southern California kidnapped, raped, and murdered several teenage girls using a variety of different tools. They became known as “the toolbox killers.”One has to wonder if they might have been inspired by this film.At any rate, this is a film that would have to rank very high on the want lists of most grindhouse-horror film collectors. And it’s rare as hell in the 16mm film format—especially uncut. So don’t delay—the sale clock is ticking!Get your offers in soon.

Details about the print:Boy oh boy…it’s a beauty. It’s a 16mm original print that’stotally uncutand in virtually brand new condition. The imagery and sound are excellent. We didn’t see a single splice and there’s almost no evidence of any wear. The color, like so many prints of this vintage, has definitely warmed a bit; but through the warmness you can still see a lot of fairly strong hues, especially yellow and blue. Some scenes look better than others. If you’re interested in a film scan, it would be fairly easy to color correct this print to its original brilliance. The print has the original VCI distribution logo at the beginning of the film.No Vinegar Smell.Comes mounted on three 1600ft. reels.

We are always selling rare prints like this, so keep checking our listings.

As always, the pictures above are all from the actual film being offered taken while the print was running on a projector. Film is much sharper than pictures indicate. Some pictures might be more out of focus than others due to the camera used NOT the actual print. We don't ever use stock photos.

Any questions at all feel free to ask and thanks for looking!
