Very rare and important, original 1829 Boston, Massachusetts Directory with listings of all residents of the city, their addresses and occupations and with a complete, separate listing of all FREE AFRICAN AMERICAN citizens under the heading “People of Color”. This Directory also includes a rare and early, folding Map of the City of Boston.
This very rare, 1829-30 City Directory is fully titled “Stimpson’s Boston Directory; Containing the Names of Inhabitants, Their Occupations, Places of Business and Dwelling Houses, With Lists of the Streets, Lanes, Wharves, the City Officers, Public Offices and Banks, and Other Useful Information ”. Boston, 1829. Published by Charles Stimpson. It is titled on the front cover simply \"Stimpson\'s Boston Directory, 1829-30\".
This fascinating 3 5/8” by 6”, 342 page (+ 16 pages of advertisements at the front) Volume lists tens of thousands of residents of Boston which was then the 4th largest city in the United States. The listings include the address and occupation of each citizen. Of special interest, however are the six pages following the Directory which contain an additional list of Bostonians titled “People of Color”. Here the names, addresses and occupations of the African American citizens of Boston are detailed. It is very interesting to see the types of occupations engaged in by Boston’s Free Blacks - while only approx 200 names are listed fully 32 of the Black citizens are employed as either barbers or hairdressers.
Also included in this volume is much information on the City Government and the Public and Private Institutions of Boston. There are 16 pages of advertisements preceding the title page as well as advertisements for the publishers - H. H. & F. H. Stimpson on the front and rear covers. .
This very rare and early Directory is a snapshot of the population of Boston, both White and Free Black, in the years just before the population exploded with the flood of immigrants coming to the city beginning in the 1840’s.
This historically important and very rare, 1829 Boston Directory is bound in its original, illustrated stiff paper wraps with an over binding of 1/2 leather and marble boards. The over binding retains both the front and rear boards but both are detached and the leather spine cover has loss at the top and bottom. The original stiff paper wraps are intact and sound but significantly soiled and worn. The interior pages are complete, tight and generally quite clean throughout with some uniform age toning, light edge wear and with the final text leaf detached. We believe that the Volume may have been issued with a folding map of the city of Boston and if so that map is lacking.
A very rare and important, early 19th century Boston, Massachusetts Directory and a fantastic addition to any genealogical library or historical collection!!!
