This poetry book/repurposed ledger is circa 1846-1850. That is the range of dates notated in the book. Half of the book has poetry cut from publications from that era pasted into the book. The other half of the book is a business ledger. I believe the book belonged to my gg grandfather John Davidson of Beaverkill, Sullivan County, NY although I can’t find his name in the book to confirm that. The reason I believe it to be his book is because he was a notable carpenter (covered bridges specifically - google his name) and he also was a tanner. The notations in the book are transactions he had with folks in that community (Sprague, Hotchkiss, Joscelyn, Barnhart, Shaver, Hitt, Hendrix, Voorhees, etc) concerning his leather tanning business. A nice piece of Catskills history if that kind of stuff interests you.
The book is fair to good shape considering it’s age. There are a few sections where the pages were either cut out or torn out. There are about 40 full pages of ledger entries and 16 pages of poetry. The pictures I have included will give you a better idea of the condition of the book.
I am not a book expert, so please feel free to ask me for further details or to clarify anything I’ve said.
