Original, 1846 South Carolina Slave saleeer Merchant\'s Trade Token issued by W.W. Wilbur of Charleston, South Carolina. This fascinating Token measures approx. 1 1/16\" in diameter and has an image of an saleeer on the obverse surrounded by text that reads \"W.W. Wilbur sale & Commission Merchant / 1846\", \"Charleston SO. CA.\" and \"Going At Only A Penny\". The reverse features an image of a bushy Palmetto Tree surrounded by text that reads \"Merchant & Manufacturers Agent\" and \"Collection Broker, Notary Public\".
Online research tells us that there are at least 13 different variations of this Slave saleeer\'s Trade Token. The variety offered is struck in brass but we are unsure of its exact variation.
William W. Wilbur is infamous for having been an saleeer and agent who operated in business during the pre-Civil War era of Charleston, South Carolina. While Wilbur’s business included sales, retail sales, notary services he is most notoriously connected with the practice of selling slaves at sale. Wilbur issued Trade Tokens beginning in about 1846 - these Tokens were he size of U.S. Large Copper Cents, and were honored by Wilbur at the value of one cent. While newspaper advertisements of the period show that Wilbur sold a wide range of goods and real estate many of those same advertisements also include the horrific listing of human beings being sold as property to the high buyer.
We are not coin or token dealers and do not know how to grade this type of brass Trade Token but have included high quality scans of the token which give a very good indication of the condition.
