1854 RADICAL ANTI-SLAVERY NEWSPAPER \"THE LIBERATOR\" WILLIAM LLOYD GARRISON:
$92.00

Rare and important, 1854, Civil War Period, Anti Slavery Newspaper titled \"The Liberator\" edited by Radical Abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison. \"The Liberator\" was published in Boston Massachusetts from 1831 to 1865 and the issue offered here is dated Januarry 13, 1854. This original 4 page newspaper measures 18” x 25” and was printed by J. B. Yerrinton & Son.

The Masthead of \"The Liberator\" is a strong and bold ant-slavery statement with a central image of Jesus Christ breaking the bonds of a Negro Slave that kneels to His left and casting out the white Slave-holder who flees at his right. At the left of the central image is a Slave sale view with the saleeer selling \"Slaves, Horses & Other Cattle\" in front of the U.S. Capitol Building. At the right is a joyous scene with a family of Free Blacks gathered in front of their home to watch a massive crowd celebrate before the Triumphal Arch of \"Emancipation\".

The Liberator was a major, weekly abolitionist newspaper which was a voice of the Radical Wing of the Anti-Slavery movement. On January 1, 1831 prominent Abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison published the first issue of \"The Liberator\". His words (printed in that first issue), \"I am in earnest — I will not equivocate — I will not excuse — I will not retreat a single inch — AND I WILL BE HEARD,\" clarified the position of the new Abolitionists. Garrison was not interested in compromise. He founded the New England Anti-Slavery Society the following year. In 1833, he met with delegates from around the nation to form the American Anti-Slavery Society. Garrison disdained politics, for he saw politics as an arena of compromise. A group split from Garrison\'s \"Radical Abolitionists\" in the 1840s to run candidates for president on the Liberty Party ticket. Garrison was not dismayed but continued to preach the doctrine of \"no compromise with slave holders\" and demand \"unconditional and immediate emancipation\". \"The Liberator\" would not have been successful had it not been for the free blacks who subscribed. Approximately seventy-five percent of the readers were free African-Americans.
