1859 Smith Beck Self-Casing Stereoscope w/Self-Casing Cabinet/Stand * Gorgeous:
$930.00

Make sure to check out all of my sales after you look at this one. I\'m listing an eclectic assortment of mechanical, technological and musical antiques, and I suspect there will be something of interest to just about everyone.
Here\'s a beautiful 150+ year old Smith, Beck & Beck self-casing stereoscope in a rare polished mahogany body (most SBB viewers were made of walnut) and an even scarcer self-casing polished mahogany pedestal/cabinet. Just as the viewing deck can be inverted and stored within the stereoscope\'s stand, so too can the entire self-cased unit be inverted and stored within the larger cabinet, which also stores the stereo cards.
The scope is beautiful, its finish is original, and it\'s working fine optically, displaying crisp stereo images, but it has 2 noteworthy issues, which are as follows: first, the focusing rack was at some point removed from the interior of the stereoscope, so the viewer\'s lens board needs to be adjusted manually by sliding the lens board either in or out with your thumb and forefinger rather than with the knurled pinion screws; second, there is no lift arm on the left rear side of the scope, so the scope cannot be reliably raised at an angle needs to be operated in the lowered position, as you see it in the photographs. The pedestal is likewise beautiful, its finish is original, and the viewer easily slips into and out of its storage shelf. There are scattered nicks, marks and age-related shrinkage cracks (consistent with the cabinet\'s age, and the authenticity of the finish); these marks and cracks should be visible in the photographs. All of the original shelves are present, and they are still snugly nested within the pedestal\'s interior. The front door is also present, although the key is not.
Despite its issues, this is a wonderful and scarce Smith, Beck and Beck outfit. The scope\'s lenses are clear, its brass fittings exhibit a beautiful patina, and the original finish on its polished mahogany body (as well the original finish on the pedestal) is almost luminescent.
With the stereoscope tucked inside, the pedestal measures approximately 10\" wide by 10\" deep by 14\" high. Shipping weight, properly packed, will be approximately 25 lb.
That\'s about it. I will pack everything carefully and properly. sale participants with no prior response history or with hidden response should contact me before placing a offer. Buyer prepays and includes shipping.
