Very Rare and original, 1880\'s Chromolithograph on Coated, Heavy Weight, Paperboard Stock Advertising Sign for Aspinall\'s Enamel Paint. This very attractive, 19th century Advertising Sign measures approx. 21\" by 15 3/4\" and has a \"washable\" glossy finish surface.
The Sign features a wonderful, Victorian Bedroom scene with a young boy painting the footboard of an iron bed, a woman painting a wicker chair blue and another young woman paint decorating a dresser. This central image is surrounded by a wide, Eastlake design border with text that reads \"Aspinall\'s Enamel\" and \"All Colours Ready for Use / In Tins 2\'6 and 1\'3 Each\". The Sign carries the mark of the lithographer - Riddle & Couchman of London.
Aspinall\'s Enamel Paint was established in 1885 at London and was a pioneer in the manufacture of Enamel Paints for interior and exterior use.
The Sign is printed on a coated stock surface that was patented in the United States in 1872 by The Harris Finishing Company as a \"Composition Card, Mounted with Enamel Water-Proof Finish\". This was a paperboard stock with coated surface on which an image could be lithographed. The surface then could be wiped with a damp cloth to clean. Signs printed on this material were meant to be displayed without glass and the manufacturer touted this printing surface as an exceptionally durable, easy to maintain and long-lasting one. As with most of the Signs we have owned printed on this type of stock, the Sign offered here as taken on a slightly yellowed hue similar to that seen on varnished Wall / Roll Maps.
This very rare and visually striking Advertising Sign is in very good condition. The Sign is complete and intact with no significant damage and no repairs of any kind. The surface is well preserved with no significant scratches, scuffs, or surface abrasions. As mentioned above, the surface of the Sign has a light, overall and uniform, slightly yellowed hue but there is no staining and no significant soiling. The Sign retains its original chain hanger at the top edge. Overall this outstanding 19th century Advertising Sign is very well preserved and displays beautifully.
