Exceptionally Rare and original, 1880\'s Cabinet Card Photograph of a Cowboy Wild West Show Performer believed to be Pony Express Rider and performer with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Hawley “Seth” Hathaway.
This simply fantastic, Cabinet Card Photograph measures approx. 3 3/4\" by 5 1/2\" and is mounted on its original card mount (overall size approx. 4 1/4\" by 6 1/2\"). The image is a studio portrait of the Cowboy Performer in full-length wearing a wide brim hat, buckskin fringed bib shirt and holding what appears to be a rolled up map in his left hand. The handsome Cowboy strikes a jaunty, relaxed pose exuding confidence and charm. The subject is not identified but came to us with two other portraits of Hathaway which helped to identify this portrait. and the mount carries the mark of the acclaimed Cincinnati Celebrity / Theatrical photographer Watson.
Seth Hathaway appears in an 1884 Cast Photograph of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West and that portrait supports the identification of the Cowboy pictured here as one and the same man.
In the mid-1880’s Hawley “Seth” Hathaway appeared with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West where he was billed as “The Last Pony Express Rider”. As part of the Show, Hathaway reenacted a harrowing ride across the plains by the riders of the Pony Express complete with whooping Indians and exhibition of marksmanship while galloping at full speed!!
This rare and wonderful, 1880’s Western Americana / Wild West Performer Cabinet Card Photograph is in very good condition. The Photograph itself is crisp and clean exhibiting sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. The card mount has some staining, soiling and light edge wear.
