1880\'s DRUMMOND TOBACCO CHROMO ADVERTISING SIGN w/ MAN-IN-THE-MOON GRAPHICS:
$360.66

Very rare, original and simply fantastic, 1880\'s Drummond Tobacco Company Point-of-Sale, Chromolithographed Advertising Sign for \"J. T. Chewing Tobacco\" featuring wonderful images of the Man-In-The-Moon and a beautiful young woman. This wonderful and exceptionally rare American Chromolithograph Advertising Sign measures approx. 12\" by 14 5/8\" including margins of from 5/8\" to 2 1/4 on each edge.

The Sign features a fantastic depiction of a crescent Man-In-The-Moon at the right. A beautiful young woman in a gauzy dress \"floats\" in the sky and \"feeds\" a plug of J. T. Chewing Tobacco to the Man-In-The-Moon. Text at the top of the Sign reads \"The Man in the Moon Reflects, as you see, the Men on Earth Who Chew J.T.\". The Chromolithography on the Sign is of the very highest quality although it is unsigned by the lithographer. There are register marks in the margins of this wonderful Advertising Sign and it may have been a Printer\'s Proof.

We have been unable to uncover ANY examples of this wonderful Sign nor any mention of it in any of the Collector\'s Reference Works. We believe it to be VERY rare and perhaps a unique example - it certainly is, in both content and condition, an outstanding example of a 19th century American Tobacco Company Advertising Sign!!

J. T. Chewing Tobacco was manufactured by the Drummond Tobacco Company of St. Louis, Missouri. James T. Drummond, president of the Drummond Tobacco, was a native of that city, and spent most of his life there. He went into the tobacco business as a book-keeper in 1862. By 1864, his business skills led to a partnership with Meyers and by 1879, he was sole owner of the Drummond Tobacco Company with a capital stock of $100,000 producing three million pounds of plug tobacco a year including both \"J.T.\" Chewing Tobacco and \"Drum Cigarettes”. By 1880, the firm had grown to employ over 1500 workers. His business triumph won him a political career which culminated in four successive terms as Mayor of the City of St. Louis between 1867 and 1872.

This rare and very beautiful, 1880\'s American Tobacco Company Chromolithograph Advertising Sign is in very good condition - the colors are rich and warm with no fading or color loss. The Image area has a single, small spot of foxing above the head of the woman as well as a horizontal band of toning that enters the Image in the area near the \"J\" of \"J.T.\" and extends about half way across the sheet. There is a tight, 1 1/2\" edge tear that enters the sheet near the top of the right hand edge and extends approx. 1/2\" into the image area as well as a second 1 1/2\" tear enters the sheet at the upper right hand corner and does not extend into the image area at all. There is some soiling in the margins and some irregular trimming to the right hand edge (not coming anywhere close to the edge of the image). The Sign is neither mounted nor framed and overall is very well preserved and will display nicely with a quality matting and framing and with a light professional cleaning will present as excellent to near mint!!

An exceptionally rare and very attractive, 1880\'s Point-of-Sale “J. T. Chewing Tobacco” Chromolithograph Advertising Sign and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
