Fantastic and quite rare, 1880\'s Jean Schoenner \"Atlas\" Magic Lantern in its’ original, wooden carrying case with fitted interior.
This outstanding child’s Magic Lantern comes with its original wood box that measures approx. 13 3/4” tall and 9” x 5 3/4” at the base. There is a chromolithograph label on one side of the Case depicting a young boy giving a Magic Lantern Presentation. The Case opens somewhat like a wardrobe suitcase revealing a fitted interior which originally held slides of different types.
The Lantern itself measures approx 11 1/2” tall (to the top of the chimney) and 5 3/4” x 9\" at the base. Beneath the lens of the Lantern there is a stamped tin support which is embossed and die cut to resemble the Greek God Atlas - supporting not the World but rather the Lantern’s lens. This Lantern was manufactured by Jean Schoenner and is known as the “Atlas” Magic Lantern.
This rare and quite wonderful, Atlas Magic lantern Kit is in very good condition overall. The wooden Case has an all over, paper cover which is worn and lacking in large areas but the Case itself is sound, intact and strong with no damage to the wood and retaining its original pair of hook latches but lacking the original bail handle at the top.
The Lantern itself is in excellent condition - complete and in excellent working condition. The body paint and the brass surfaces are very well preserved however the figure of Atlas has lost most of its original black surface paint. Otherwise the Lantern is very well preserved and displays nicely. There are no slides included here.
