1885 BUFFALO BILLS WILD WEST COWBOY CABINET CARD PHOTO CIVIL WAR EAGLE CARETAKER:
$338.33

Exceptionally Rare and original, 1880\'s Cabinet Card Photograph of Civil War Veteran, Cowboy Wild West Show Performer and the last caretaker of the War Eagle “Old Abe” - the famed, Civil War mascot of the 8th Regiment Wisconsin Volunteers - George Gillies

This simply fantastic, Cabinet Card Photograph measures approx. 4\" by 5 3/4\" and is mounted on its original card mount (overall size approx. 4 1/4\" by 6 1/2\"). The image is a studio portrait of the Cowboy Performer wearing a wide-brimmed Campaign hat, fringed jacket adorned with various medals and wonderful, bead decorated Native American Indian moccasins. A Remington Rolling Block sporting rifle leans against a rock beside him. The mount carries the mark of the photographer – Spicer of Clintonville & Wittenberg, Wisconsin.

While best known as the last caretaker of “Old Abe” the War Eagle, after the death of “old Abe” Gillies also appeared and performed as a marksman with various traveling Wild West Shown including, for a time, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West.

The majestic Bald Eagle known as \"Old Abe\" was carried for three years during the Civil War by the men of Company C of the 8th Wisconsin Infantry during which the Eagle saw action with the Regiment (which became known as the \"Eagle Regiment\") in 34 Battles and was wounded twice. After the War \"Old Abe\" became quite a celebrity and his was one of the most popular exhibits at the Centennial Exposition of 1876. Abe (who was actually a female eagle) died of smoke inhalation in the arms of her last Caretaker – George Gillies.

This rare and wonderful, 1880’s Western Americana / Wild West Performer Cabinet Card Photograph is in excellent condition. The Photograph itself is crisp and clean exhibiting sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. The card mount is also clean and crisp and exceptionally well preserved.

A very rare and wonderful, 1880\'s Cabinet Card Photograph of Civil War Veteran, Cowboy Wild West Show Performer and the last caretaker of the War Eagle “Old Abe” George Gillies and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
