Exceptionally rare and wonderful, 1885 Cabinet Card Photograph of P.T. Barnum\'s \"Barnum & London Circus\" Parade down the main street of St. Johnsbury, Vermont taken on July 25th, 1885 by Vermont Photographer D. A. Clifford.
This fantastic American Circus Parade Cabinet Card Photo measures approx. 7 1/4” by 4 1/4” and is mounted on its original, photographer’s card mount (overall size of mount is 8 3/8” by 5 1/8”). The back of the mount carries the mark of the Photographer - D. A. Clifford of St. Johnsbury, Vermont along with an applied label with text that reads “Barnum‘s Pets on Street Parade, / At St Johnsbury, Vt., July 25, 1885. No. 2”.
On July 25th, 1885 Barnum\'s London Circus performed at St. Johnsbury, Vermont and, like in every town that the Circus visited, there was a \"Grand Procession\" / Circus Parade held that day through the streets of St. Johnsbury. Photographer D. A. Clifford captured an unknown number of Photographs of this “monumental” event. The Cabinet Card Photograph offered here is one of those Views but we have been unable to find any examples of this particular view in any Museum or Library collection.
The Photograph was taken from a second floor location on Main Street in St. Johnsbury. A large group of people can be seen gathered on the opposite side of the street while the “herd” of Elephants are shepherded down Main Street by their trainers and handlers. We believe this to be both an exceptionally rare and historically important Photograph!
This outstanding Cabinet Card Photograph is in very good to excellent condition. The Photograph itself exhibit sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. Both the Image and the mount bare clean and crisp and the only flaw is a thin scratch in the negative that can be seen crossing the hind quarters of the last Elephants in line.
