1890s GILLON\'S MUSTY ALE ADVERTISING BEER MUG SALT GLAZE STONEWARE WHITE\'S UTICA:
$158.50

Outstanding and quite rare, ca1890\'s, Cobalt Blue decorated, Gray Salt Glazed Stoneware Patrick Gillon & Company / Bartholomay Brewing Company Advertising Beer Mug manufactured by N. A. White & Son of Utica, New York (Whites Utica) in outstanding, original condition.

This fantastic, blue decorated Gray Salt Glazed Stoneware Beer Mug / Stein measures approx. 5” tall and 3” in diameter at the base. The surface in intricately decorated with raised and incised bands and cobalt blue glaze over the gray, salt glaze pottery ground. There is text on the front of the Beer Mug that reads \"Gillon\'s Musty\". The only maker\'s mark is the number \"9\" incised in the base of the Mug but this Mug has been identified as having been manufactured by Whites of Utica sometime between 1890 to about 1907.

We had some trouble identifying the Brewery that brewed \"Gillon\'s Musty\" (Ale we assume). After significant research we discovered Patrick Gillon & Co. of Milford, Massachusetts a distillery and \"agent\" for Bartholomay Brewing Company. Like many Brewers, Bartholomay had agents that bottled and sold its products in other states, including W.W. Walker & Company of Hagerstown, Maryland, John S. Low of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and William Albrecht of Boston, Massachusetts. Likely Patrick Gillon & Co. was another such bottler. We found a number of examples of an advertising postcard distributed jointly by the Patrick Gillon Co. and Bartholomay Brewing Company as well as blob top beer bottles embossed with the name of Patrick Gillion & Co. We are quite sure that the Beer Mug offered here advertises a beer either brewed by Patrick Gillon & Co. or one distributed by them for the Bartholomay Brewing Company.

This wonderful, 19th century, Cobalt Blue decorated, Gray Salt Glaze Stoneware Advertising Beer Mug is in excellent+ condition. The surface is clean and crisp with no staining or discoloration and the Mug displays beautifully. There are no chips, cracks, repairs or manufacturing flaws of any kind. Please see the scans below for a good indication of the form and condition of this Beautiful Cobalt Blue decorated, Gray Salt Glaze Advertising Beer Mug.

Again we must stress that this is NOT a later reproduction, reissue or counterfeit example but an original, ca1890\'s Cobalt Blue decorated, Gray Salt Glazed Stoneware Patrick Gillon & Co / Bartholomay Brewing Company Advertising Beer Mug manufactured by White\'s of Utica and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
