Very rare and original, 1890\'s Tin Lithograph Stollwerck Chocolates Advertising Candy Bar Vending Machine Mechanical Bank. This outstanding, Tin Litho Vending Bank measures approx. 6 1/4\" tall and 3\" by 2 1/2\" at the base. The Bank is made in the form of a miniature Vending Machine and would be stocked with small squares of Stollwerck\'s Chocolate Candy. When a penny was put in the slot at the top of the Bank, the child could pull the wire ring on the front of the Bank and a single square of Chocolate would drop from the front below the overhang. There is a simple, key activated lock on one of the side panels which allows the Bank to be opened and the money taken out and the chocolate restocked.
The Bank has a glass front through which the small Chocolate Bars could be viewed and all of the tin surfaces are elaborately and beautifully lithographed. This version of the Stollwerk\'s Chocolate Vending Bank is known as the \"Cherubs\" Bank and the side and back panels feature images of putti-like cherubs harvesting chocolate beans, playing musical instruments and displaying an example of this wonderful Tin Litho Vending Bank. There are various panels of text encouraging thrift and advertising Stollwerk\'s Chocolate. The bottom of the Bank is embossed with the Stollwerk name.
These Vending Banks are considered by some to be a form of Mechanical Bank while others place them in a separate category of Banks called \"Vending Banks\".
This wonderful and very rare, 19th century Tin Litho Vending Bank is in very good condition - complete and intact with no physical damage or repairs of any kind. The glass panel is intact but there is wear to the lithography on the surfaces as can be seen in the scans below. The mechanism works well and the Bank is presently unlocked - unfortunately we do not have a key but the key is a very simple one to replace. The bottom of the bank does have some surface rust.
