Very rare and , 1897 Black Americana, Post Civil War Southern African American Images Card Game featuring 52 cards each with a different and outstanding photographic images of Negro life in the South at the turn of the 20th century. This Card Game is titled \"In Dixieland\" and was published by the Fireside Game Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio. The individual photographs (a different photo on each of the 52 cards) are copyright 1896 by L. D. Baldwin.

This fascinating Black Americana Card Game originally consisted of 53 playing card style game cards which are separated into 13 groups of 4 cards and a single \"Crown Card\" (the deck offered here is lacking one of the 52 Playing Cards - number I-2). The 13 groups are designated A through M and the individual cards in each group are numbered 1 through 4 (such as A1, A2, A3, & A4). Each card in a lettered group is titled and also has the titles of the other 3 cards that make up its group. The game was played with rules similar to many \"Old Maid\" type Card Games of the period such as the ever popular Game of Authors.

Each card measures approx. 2 1/2” x 3 1/2\" with rounded corners. A copyright date of 1896 is printed on many of the cards as is the name of the publisher \"L. D. Baldwin\". The \"Crown Card\" carries the mark of the manufacturer and the 1897 copyright date. The cards are manufactured in the style of a deck of Playing Cards with matching pictorial backs that include images of watermelons, cotton plants, possums, and a central tropical image that includes an alligator.

While not exactly \"politically correct\" by today\'s standards, the 52 different photographs that illustrate the fronts of the cards are NOT the typical, degrading or comical views often seen in images from this period of Southern Blacks but rather they are charming, respectful and heartwarming photos of African Americans living daily life at home, at work and at play.

As stated above this Deck includes 52 of the 53 original cards - it lacks one of the Playing Cards - Card Number I-2. The 52 included Cards are generally in very good but used condition with no serious damage, tears or edge chipping but with light soiling and light edge wear. One of the 52 Cards (Card number I-3) is significantly soiled on the front surface and one Card (card number F-4) has a short edge tear. We do not have the original box for the Deck. We have included a number of scans below that give a good indication of the content and condition of this fascinating Black Americana Card Game.

A very rare and simply charming, 1897 American Black Americana Photographic Subject Card Game and a fantastic addition to any Game, Playing Card or Black Americana collection!!!

Overseasshippping is extra and cost will be quoted at buyers request. Massachusetts residents must add 6.25% sales tax.
