1897 G-A-R Match Safe
Recent estate find. Measures approximately 1-9/16” x 2-7/8”. Weighs 35 grams. There is seemingly no maker’s mark. The item is silverplate on brass, and it looks like there used to be a brighter silver wash or plating of sort – most of which is now long gone.
The lid opens and closes as well as it should. It stays closed when it should, and it stays open when it should. No problems with the hinge.
There’s some brass showing to the raised details of the pattern on each of the corners. There are also a couple small spots of brass showing on the plain backside portion.
The remnants of the silver wash on the pattern and to the edges has a good deal of irritation and related spottiness.
Both sides of the striker are worn, faded and dirty from being well used. One side of the striker has a particularly nasty amount of corrosion (irritation, dirtiness, rough).
The item has scratching, dullness, darkening, discoloration and all that sort of wear throughout. The inside is filthy and discolored.
I think it’s a handsome item that is rare and in good condition, but it is your opinion that matters most, so please look to the provided photos to best judge what you are offerding on.
