Military Lodges (1732-1899): The Apron and the Sword, Freemasonry Under Arms; Being an account of lodges in regiments and ships of war, and of famous soldiers and sailors (of all countries) who have belonged to the society. Together with Biographies of Distinguished Military and Naval Brethren, and Anecdotes showing the Influence of Masonry in Warfare. By Robert Freke Gould (late 31st Foot, Barrister-at-law). Past Senior Grand Deacon of England. Publisher: Gale and Polden Ltd. No date but Preface dated 1899. First edition. Original publishers cloth, embossed with gilt title and design. Boards have some rubbing and bumping to edges. Spine has some fading/dulled, cloth wear/loss to ends from shelf wear. Binding is relatively firm -- sections of the book are starting to separate when opened fully. The front page contains the following \" With the author\'s compliments. 22:IV:10.\" and \"175th Anniversary of the Prince of Wales Lodge No. 259, May 22nd, 1962\" and the signature of Cecil F. Cumberlege, the Lieutenant Grand Commander. Frontispiece tissue guard complete. Scattered foxing. Some creasing to page corners. 233 pages, plus 36 pages of advertisements at book\'s end. From one of the most respected Masonic historians comes a detailed account of Military Lodges. Robert Freke Gould, (1836-1915), was best remembered for his massive six volume \"History of Freemasonry\", and at one time was a Senior Grand Deacon of the Lodge of England. Quite scarce.
Also includes signed letter from Cecil F. Cumberlege, the Lieutenant Grand Commander of the Prince of Wales Lodge No. 259 (dated August 1, 1962). The letter references the 175th Anniversary of the Prince of Wales Lodge.
