1901 NATIVE AMERICAN COMANCHE INDIAN CHIEF CABINET CARD PHOTO BY WILL SOULE #1:
$235.50

Very rare and stunningly beautiful, 1901 Oversize Cabinet Card Photograph of Native American Comanche Indian Chief At-a-watz-na-ca-ma-ran-et (known as Man Who is Not Afraid) by the famous Western Photographer William S. Soule. While this outstanding Portrait Photograph is copyright 1901 by the Pioneer Roll Paper Company, this is a known Image taken by Will Soule sometime between 1869 and 1874.

This rare and original, Card Mount Photograph measures approx. 4” by 5 1/2” and is mounted on its original photographer’s Card Mount (overall size of mount is 6 3/4” by 8 3/4”) and is attached to a very attractive decorative matt measuring 8” by 10”. The subject is identified with text in the negative that reads “At-a-watz-na-ca-ma-ran-et or \'The man who is not afraid\'\"

This wonderful Cabinet Card Photo is a bust portrait of the proud and handsome Comanche Chief wearing a bone hair-pipe breastplate, fur wrapped braid with beaded drops and holding what appears to be a feather decorated pipe.

We have been unable to uncover any information about At-a-watz-na-ca-ma-ran-et and any information about his life would be greatly appreciated.

William Stinson Soule was a young Civil War veteran who joined Tappin\'s Trading Company and began taking amateur photographs on the Oklahoma and Kansas Plains in late 1868. From 1869 to 1874 he worked from Fort Sill, where he created the most comprehensive collection of photographs ever taken of the Southern Plains Indians, including the Apache, Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Comanche tribes. (Located 85 miles southwest of Oklahoma City, Fort Sill is the only installation built during the Indian Wars that is still used by the U.S. Army.) On leaving Indian Territory, Soule settled in Boston, where his brother, John P. Soule, owned a photographic business. Belous & Weinstein state “Of Will Soule\'s work on the Indian frontier, 166 paper prints and sixty-nine original glass plate negatives are known to have survived. ... A survey of known materials clearly indicate Soule’s photographs to have included (photos) other than Indian portraits and views of Indian life. Some photographs of garrison life at Fort Sill, the early construction of the fort, portraits of some white army scouts and interpreters are all included. The likely range of Soule’s interest suggests that only a small fragment of his eight years of work on the Indian frontier may have survived.\".

This rare and wonderful, 1901 Cabinet Card Photograph is in very good condition and displays beautifully. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich and warm. The Image is clean and crisp as is the back of the card mount (which is visible on the reverse of the display) although the mount does have a corner chip. Overall the Photograph is very well preserved and displays beautifully.

A very rare and simply wonderful, 1901 Oversize Cabinet Card Photograph of Native American Comanche Indian Chief At-a-watz-na-ca-ma-ran-et (known as Man Who is Not Afraid) by the famous Western Photographer William S. Soule and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
