Wonderful, 1910\'s or 1920\'s Weeden, Horizontal Live Steam Engine #14 Toy. This early 20th century, working Live Steam Engine measures approx. 6\" tall and 5 3/4\" x 6\" at the base. The Toy is made of brass, iron and cast lead and mounted on the original six legged, cast iron base. There is an all brass, horizontal boiler with 4 rows of embossed, simulated \"rivets. The Boiler is attached to the dark red colored, heavy cast iron base with 2 black, iron bands and is connected by a steam line to a cylinder which turn the balance wheel by means of a flat, metal drive shaft. There is an governor atop the cylinder and the boiler is embossed with the Weeden name.
We are not experts on Steam Engine Toys but we were able to discover the following about the company from steamtoy.com: \"The Weeden Manufacturing Company was started by William N. Weeden in the 1880s in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The company first produced oil lamp burners and tin plate household items. Through his dealings he came to meet the owner of the \"Youth\'s Companion\" magazine where they struck up a deal to produce toy steam engines to give away as premiums for his magazine. The engine that Weeden produced was the Weeden No.1 which was priced at $1.00 and held a patent date of May 19, 1885, and manufactured up to 1905. Other products he made were comb cases, match safes and the Weeden Magic Lantern.\" In the 1890\'s the Weeden Company expanded their line of steam engines featuring cast iron bases, large brass boiler, nickel plating and more realistic looking steam engines.\".
The Toy Steam Engine offered here is an example of the Weeden #14 which was produced from the late 19th century through the 1940\'s. From what we could discover, it seems likely that this Engine dates from the 1910\'s - starting in the 1920\'s the base was a much brighter color and all other indications seem to point to a date of manufacture in the late teens. The Steam Engine is complete except that it does lack its original burner.
We have not tested this early 20th century, live steam engine but it appears that it is in working order. The Engine is complete, the sight glass is intact, the piston and drive rod move freely and smoothly. The tank is sound and intact with no holes, damage or repairs. The paint on the base is worn and there is overall wear from use but no significant damage and no repairs of any kind. Except for the missing burner the Engine is in very good condition - sound, intact and otherwise complete.
A rare and very desirable, early version of the Weeden No. 14, Horizontal Live Steam Engine Toy and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
