A LITTLE HISTORY

A box of mouches (literally:‘flies’)this little box contains a favourite beauty trick of European women for over 200 years. Better known as beauty spots, these small black pieces were named after their resemblance to a fly that has landed on the wearer’s skin. Popularised by the French in the 18th century and deployed as a cunning way to cover unsightly marks, mouches created a map of intrigue across the décolletage. The placement of the beauty spot – on the cheek or by the mouth, for example – also became a coded means of communicating emotions, wealth and even political allegiances.

A Little More History

the French, the beauty spot was a very small, often distinctively shaped fabric patch that was applied to the face or exposed upper body, and was solely applied for the purpose of inviting attention. An essential and required part of high society dress, mouches were worn by both sexes, but women seem to have indulged in the trend rather more than men.The display of pale, marble-white, if not anaemic skin was essential for the 18th century upper classes in society to demonstrate they had never been exposed to a harsh environment, let alone engaged in manual labour. This idle culture created the fashion (and need) for thick, intense whitening make-up for both sexes. Ironically, the obsession to convey a life of leisure was a near-suicidal endeavour due to the deadly lead-and-arsenic based whitening compounds.

Back in the day Beauty Marks were worn not only on ones face, but also on ones neck, shoulder and chest.

The language of Beauty Marks, different sources have more or less the same meanings... all of which weremischievous and follow precise rules.

Here is another list I found:

Near the mouth, especially the corner of the mouth or lower lip meant: Pleasure. If you had two around the lips the first one was called "Beautiful", the second "Murderous", on the throat, they expressed "Gallantry-Daring". Also if the beauty Mark wason the nose, it meant you were "Brazen". Onthe corner of the eye "Passionate", thoughnot to be confused with the "Irresistible" which was always placed near the eye. And if you wore a Beauty Mark onthe middle of the forehead, it was a sign of "Majesty".

“She had this one imperfection that made her even more beautiful”
