1928 BB MASON Hull Wine Merchant Interior Photograph of Mosoplase Lodge Port #2:
$73.27

This is 1 of a number of original sepia and black & white original photographs from c1928 and slightly later of the Wine and Spirit Merchants and Bonded Storage in Hull called B.B. Mason & Co.
Benjamin Burnett Mason was the son of Captain Samuel Mason, born in Hull 1822 and died 1888. His father Captain Samuel was Captain of the \" Vine \" a vessel which he used to trade between the ports of Hull and Hamburg. He got married in 1818 to Martha Burnett, daughter of Isaac Burnett a grocer and tea dealer. They had 5 sons and 5 daughters. Their 3rd son was this chap Benjamin B Mason.
He was their eldest surviving son and followed in his fathers footsteps on the sea and was apprenticed by Mr William Hopwood, ship owner. On the death of Mr Hopwood Benjamin and fellow clerk Mr John Ellerby purchased the business and it was then called Ellerby & Mason, Commission Agents. 15 years later his partner Mr Ellerby died. He carried on the business on his own. Slightly later he purchased another business Hayes & Whitaker Wine & Spirit Merchants. Also incorporated a couple of other smaller similar business\'s too.
The site of Mr S. B. Masons offices, in Lowgate in 1892 when a Memoir book was written. ( see my other listings for this book ). He concentrated on the shipping and bonding departments, and these prospered very well and by 1866 they had 10 bonding warehouses, and owned several vessels - ships for carrying wine and spirits to and from Hull to various ports.
Mr Mason concentrated on his bonded goods at Customs No. 8, Posterngate, Hull, and at the time of the book being written it was said to be one of England\'s largest private bond warehouses. They also owned Customs No.11 on Manor Alley for about 40 years and it is said that it was originally a Chapel where John Wesley preached.
B.B. Masons interests included him becoming a J.P. in 1881, he was a Director of Hull Dock Company. When the Bill for making the Hull & Barnsley & West Riding Railway was being promoted he was called to give evidence before the House of Lords and House of Commons against the scheme. He was a member of the Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club.
The Funeral of the Late B.B. Mason, J.P. with the cortege, a list of mourners and which carriages they were in. A list as long as you\'re arm.Condolences from Hull Salisbury Club - Hull Industrial Schools - Working Men\'s Committee - Hull Literary & Scientific Mechanics Institute - Hull Dock Company - Churchill Club - Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club - Pilots Office - Humber Conservancy - The Humber Pilot Commissioners - The Humber Mutual Protection Society. He was buried in Hull General Cemetery.
The company ceased trading in the early 1980\'s. This is one of the original sepia and black and white photographs of this companies wine and spirits merchants bottling area, barrels and the bond warehouses interiors. As well as the horse and cart drays and later AEC vehicle from the London North Eastern Railway being loaded up.This is an antique original sepia toned photograph of inside the wine and spirit merchants B.B. MASON & Co with large barrels, bottles, and some workers.
The name on the barrels looks like Mosoplase Port but when I searched for this, nothing came up so I\'m not sure?
Someone has written the date 1928 on the back.
