1930\'s FRANK RINEHART\'S NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS w/ 65 LARGE FOLIO PHOTOGRAPHS:
$2275.00

Exceptionally rare and original, ca1830’s Volume of 65 stunningly beautiful, large format, sepia toned, silver print Photographs of Native American Crow, Sioux, Apache, etc. Indians by Frank Albert Rinehart.

This outstanding, large folio Volume is titled “Rinehart’s North American Indians, Volume 2” and measures approx. 16 1/2\" by 20 1/2\" and contains the 65 silver gelatin, sepia toned Photographs from Rinehart’s original negatives on heavy weight, textured “linen” stock. Each Photo is interleaved with a title page identifying the subject. The Photo sheets and the titles measure 16” x 18 3/4” while the Images themselves each measure 11 1/2” by 14”.

The Volume is bound in buckskin, with Rinehart\'s North American Indians carved into front cover, with additional decoration of a war club and pipe, supported on the inside front and rear covers by a thick piece of cowhide, with pyrographic decorations of American Indian motifs, one signed \"Hontz\".

The title page reads \"Volume II. The Majority of These Portraits Were Made During the Trans-Mississippi Exposition in 1898 and on the Crow Reservation in 1900\".

This exceptionally rare Portfolio contains 65 stunningly beautiful “Art Photo” Photograph by Frank A. Rinehart of identified Native American Crow, Sioux, Apache, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Pueblo, Omaha, Chippewa and Kiowa Indians with the majority being Crow and Sioux (32 of the Images).

The circumstances surrounding the production of Rinehart\'s North American Indians are unclear. According to John Carter, Senior Researcher at the Nebraska Historical Society and an authority on Rinehart, The Rinehart-Mardsen Studio operated in Omaha until the 1930s, when it was purchased by the Brandise Department store. Mardsen continued to run the studio until the negatives were acquired by Royall Sutton in the 1960s. The publishing notes on the title page read “Published by George Marsden / Rinehart-Marsden / Brandeis / Omaha, Nebraska”. It appears that the Photographs in this Volume were produced from Rinehart’s original negatives sometime between the mid 1930’s and 1960.

This very rare and simply fantastic, original, Portfolio of Frank Rinehart’s Native American Indian Photographs is in very good condition. The buckskin covers are intact and sound but soiled at the edges and somewhat edge worn. The inter pages and all 65 of the silver print Photographs are exceptionally well preserved – clean and crisp and beautiful. The Images themselves are stunningly beautiful and each would make a fantastic display if matted and framed. Offered is a collection of outstanding Frank Rinehart Photographs that would otherwise be almost impossible to assemble and the Volume is worthy of at place at the very center of even the most outstanding Native American Indian Photography Collection or Library.

This Volume is offered here, as always, without reserve and with the confidence that it will attract the serious attention that it justly deserves!!!

Frank Albert Rinehart (February 12, 1861–December 17, 1928) was an American artist famous for his drawings, paintings, and photographs depicting Native American personalities and scenes, especially the leaders and members of the delegations who attended the 1898 Indian Congress in Omaha. Rinehart was born in Lodi, Illinois. He and his brother, Alfred, moved to Colorado in the 1870\'s and found employment at the Charles Bohm photography studio, in Denver. In 1881 the Rinehart brothers formed a partnership with famous Western photographer William Henry Jackson, who had achieved widespread fame for his images of the West. Under Jackson\'s teachings, Rinehart\'s perfected his professional skills, and developed a keen interest in Native American culture. In downtown Omaha, Rinehart opened a studio in the Brandeis Building, where he worked until his death.
In 1898, and in occasion of the Indian Congress held in conjunction with the Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition, Rinehart was commissioned to photograph the event and the Native American personalities who attended it. Together with his assistant Adolph Muhr (who would later be employed by the famous photographer Edward S. Curtis), they produced what is now considered \"one of the best photographic documentations of Indian leaders at the turn of the century\". Rinehart and Muhr photographed American Indians at the Indian Congress in a studio on the Exposition grounds with an 8 x 10 glass-negative camera with a German lens. Platinum prints were produced to achieve the broad range of tonal values that medium afforded.
After the Indian Congress, Rinehart and Muhr traveled the Indian reservations for two years, portraying Native American leaders who had not attended the event, as well as depicting general aspects of the indigenous everyday life and culture. The collection of Rinehart Indian Photographs is currently preserved at Haskell Indian Nations University. Since 1994, the collection has been organized, preserved, copied, and cataloged in a computer database, funded by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Hallmark Foundation. It includes images from the 1898 Exposition, the 1899 Greater American Exposition, studio portraits from 1900, and photographs by Rinehart taken at the Crow Agency in Montana also in 1900.
