Once the largest kingdom in the German Empire, following WWI and the Revolution, Prussia became the largest of the Federal States of the Weimar Republic. Although the revolution had stripped away many of the powers formerly reserved to thestatesunder the Empire, theyretained much of their domestic fiscal autonomy under the new Republic and during the Hitler dictatorship.
After WWII, the state of Prussia was consigned to the dust heap of history, absorbed as it was into the Soviet Union, Poland, the German Democratic Republic, and the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1953 West Germany assumed responsibility for Prussian state debt under the terms of the London Agreement. That debt was retired in the early 2000s.
