This vintage Martin Committee I alto is a gorgeous saxophone in good condition. The wild “searchlight” or “city skyline” engraving on the bell is still very crisp and the horn retains about 95% of what I take to be the original lacquer. The only lacquer wear worth mentioning is a small area on the back of the horn near the adjustable thumbrest so it is not very noticeable. There are some very minor scratches and tiny dings, but certainly no significant dents, dings or other cosmetic issues. The cork on the neck is missing a a very tiny piece on the end but the mouthpiece still seals well and it does not affect play. I have included lots of pictures to help you judge the condition of this fine instrument.
The serial number is 120603, which puts the date of manufacture at 1937. A set of older plain rivet pads is still seating well, and the horn plays easily (and very much in tune) with that lush Martin sound. You may want to invest in a few adjustments or maybe even a repad if you’re planning to use the horn on gigs, but the horn plays better than I do just the way it is.The only work I am aware of done on the horn was the professional removal of two small dents in the neck. These can be detected in the photos but the area of the repairs is very smooth. The serial number on the neck matches the number on the body of the horn.
The sax comes in the original two handle Martin case, which is still very sound despite all the usual dings and scrapes. Also included is the original neck plug, which you can see in the pictures. I will ship the horn in this case with plenty of extra packaging to insure it gets to you with no damage. I will also include a newly bought Ritter case, neck strap, and a Yamah 4C mouthpiece. Of course, I will ship with full insurance to protect both seller and buyer just in case.
