1941 Marx Pre-War #500 Army Supply Train Box Set:
$281.00

Offered for sale is a Marx pre-war #500 Army Supply Train Set.   I received this as a gift in the late 1980\'s; since then, it\'s sat quietly in my warm, dry basement.   I\'m not a Marx collector, so I can\'t vouch for the authenticity or completeness, so let the description and the pictures be your guide. (I did my best to photograph the set, under \'s constraint of 12 pictures.)  (I\'m open and will post any and all comments or observations about the set, and will provide questioners with additional pictures if requested.)  Contents include:

  • Original box, with dividers.   Other than a small gouge on the top and being somewhat dirty, the box is brick.  It looks to have been sold and shipped through the Spiegel catalog, with the box itself being the shipping carton - it has the remains of old Spiegel stickers, including a Merry Christmas sticker.  There is no set model number on the box (the box itself looks generic), but there is a stamped number of 59246 on the box.  (Marx enthusiasts, please let me know; one has advised me that this represents set no. 5924.)   And on the box - faded but still legible - is the US postage label, dated 12/4/1941 - 3 days before Pearl Harbor.
  • Documents include the Instruction set (complete, intact, no tears), a blue Marx Track Plan booklet (which looks complete, but has been pulled apart into its separate pages), and what looks to be an original packing slip for the set.
  • Trains:  in general, the train cars show very light surface rust on the couplers, but the tin plate bodies themselves are pristine - no rust, minimal dents, and nothing that I can detect as missing (except as noted below).  I carefully cleaned all of the cars (using only a clean rag, no water or solvents of any kind), removing old grease and dirt on the trucks, so if you plan to run the train, I recommend a good lubrication first.)  When tested, all cars rolled smoothly and easily down the track.
  • Locomotive- an 0-4-0 configuration (although in the box I found what looks to be an additional leading or trailing truck, which may or may not have been originally attached to the locomotive.)   When tested, the locomotive ran forward with good speed, and the light worked fine.   The lens in the front of the locomotive is intact, but tends to come loose and fall out when the loco is handled.  Like many of these locomotives, the paint on the front bumper has been worn off due to collisions.
  • Tender - pristine, and almost new except for 1-2 very small paint scratches.
  • Radio Car - pristine except for some small scratches, and includes what looks to be the original small envelope with instructions on how to attach the radio antenna, and the antenna itself.
  • Searchlight Car - pristine except for a very small patch of rust on the actual car, and working.  (This is the one car I did some work on - when tested, I found the original wire to the searchlight was shorting out, due to worn insulation.  I carefully replaced the wire and all is well.   The actual light flickers as the car runs down the track, presumably due to the wiggling of the tracking contact - the bulb itself does not flicker.)
  • Artillery car - pristine (except for a little lost paint on the left side) and working.  Includes two wooden artillery shells (held to the car for my convenience by a rubber band, but it looks like there are two holes in the gun itself meant to store the shells when the train is running.)  The spring in the gun works fine, and I enjoyed lobbing the shells across the room for a time.
  • Flat car.  Minor paint scratches and dings, but otherwise pristine, but has no brackets or other attachments / loads. I\'ve had input that it\'s missing a tank and its associated bracket.
  • Accessories:  the Marx Model 709, 50Watt transformer appears to have the original cord and is visually in good shape - but does NOT  work when plugged in.  (I did not attempt to fix this, but perhaps someone can rewire the internals and still have a nice exterior package).  Also included is a track lockon, and a set of 0-27 three-rail track:  six straights and twelve curves.

In summary, an excellent example of pre-war model trains, with the added kicker of it likely being one of the last trains actually made before the war started.    I would like to see this set find a good, appreciative home.
