Decorative,vintage fold-out map of the British Isles, with elaborate titlecartouche, compass rose, and illustrated border. - This handsome map islithographed in fullcolor and opens to a generous 36" x 30".
- It was designed by Charles E.Riddiford, lithographed by A. Hoen & Company, and published by the National Geographic Society in 1949.
- The title cartouche includes a portrait of King George VIand his wife,parents of Queen Elizabeth II, who would succeed him to the throne fouryears after this map was printed.
- This map covers the United Kingdom of Great Britain andNorthernIreland, as well as the Republic of Ireland, which had separated fromthe British Commonwealth and declared itself a sovereign state the yearthis map was printed.
- Details on the map include cathedrals, castles,lighthouses, roads,railways, canals, and more.
- Surrounding the map are more than 40portraits, views, and coats of arms.
- Condition: This map is in very good condition,bright and clean, with no marks,rips, or tears. It is blank on the back, with no printing on thereverseside, and it folds to 8¼" x 5¾". Please see the scans and feel free toask any questions.
- It was issued as a supplement to the April 1949 NationalGeographicMagazine, and it is dated in the lower margin.
- Its full titleis The British Isles: England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales,officially known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and NorthernIreland and the Republic of Ireland.
- Cartographer Charles E. Riddiford was a native ofWoolwich, England. Hegraduated from the Edinburgh Geographic Institute and served in theRoyal Flying Corps in World War I.
- Riddiford joined the prestigious Edinburghcartographic firm of John Bartholomew & Co. after the war andlater worked for Oxford University Press before moving to America towork for the National Geographic Society.
