1963-1966 NASA Kennedy Space Center U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Historical News Release lot. You will receive (4) RARE news release multipage documents that highlight land use, building & construction plans for new space center. President John F. Kennedy's 1961 goal of a crewed lunar landing by 1970 required an expansion of launch operations-Wikipedia. On September 1, 1961, NASA requested appropriations for initial land purchases on Merritt Island to support the Apollo Lunar Landing Program. This land would eventually become the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) we know today-NASA. The NASA KSC Headquarters building, located in the industrial area, was formally opened on May 26, 1965-NASA.The huge Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) was completed in 1966. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was responsible for building new NASA Florida facilities. The documents outlined cannot be found anywhere and offer an insight into the beginning of KSC.
