Up for your offer is a nice project 1968 Pontiac Firebird Convertible that runs and drives – but, is not quite ready for the street. Still in need of some more work and restoration. Just have too many projects and want to reduce my hoard and pay some bills. Located in south-central Texas near Austin. offer starts and Reserve is $4800. Please read my Terms below before offerding.
This is a nice project car Firebird I bought maybe 10+ years ago. Car has good legal paperwork. A tremendous amount of work, parts and labor have been put into the car already. Big, major, body and drive train stuff is done already - but much more work is needed.
Car was originally an Alpine Blue 6 cylinder car. Car currently has a rebuilt 326 Pontiac with Turbo 350 automatic, power steering, power top and power drum brakes and no A/C.
Work doneDrive trainI bought this car as a roller shell with no drivetrain. Car had no dash – so the actual miles are unknown. I put in a fresh 1965 Rebuilt Pontiac 326. It had a fully stock-ish rebuild and was bored 0.030 - I added a Summit 2801 cam (similar to a Ram Air 3 cam but higher lift) and factory cast iron 4 barrel, Quadrajet carb and modern HEI distributer. Has stock exhaust manifolds with new dual Walker exhaust pipes to new Summit Turbo mufflers. Car currently has no tail pipes. Engine runs good and sounds awesome and semi- loud. Camshaft is somewhat aggressive and has some lope and Old School “rumpty-rump” sound. Transmission is an original Turbo 350 from another later model Firebird. I cleaned it out changed the filter and seals. Unknown mileage but it was super clean inside and it works well but is does have a slight drip.I have upgraded to a bigger 3 core aftermarket aluminum heavy duty radiator. Rear axle was checked and cleaned out and put in a new fluid. It is a non-posi and has 3.23 gearing. I replaced both U-joints as well.
BodyLots of new metal. Previous owner put in new floor pans, did some quarter panel work and replaced the dash cowl area. I put on and bought new reproduction fenders and a 400 style hood with the scoop holes (I do not have the scoop inserts). Has new lower front sheet metal too. Bumpers are fair and just driver quality. Passenger door is very good and driver’s door is very straight too but both need minor rust holes repaired in the outer front corners. Trunk floor is very solid and has one small area to patch or repair. The quarter panels are not finished nor done perfect and need additional finishing up – but they do look fair. Only metal issues left is rear corners under the car trunk. Wish they would have patched them prior to installing the quarters. Over all the rest of the body is very nice with very few dings or damage. Very, very little bondo on the car at all. Have a little in the seams of the quarter panel welds - but it is miniscule. Car needs additional alignment of panels and some parts are just attached by a bolt or two. Most of the car was sanded to bare metal or had a new panel installed. Car is in thinning and fading epoxy primer and needs additional sanding and work and of course paint work. Car has a little surface rust in places. I personally hand brush painted the entire undercarriage and frame and engine compartment with POR-15. Lot of work but it looks fair and stays protected. Car comes with original rear cocktail shakers. I do not have the fronts. Convertible frame is excellent but the top material is poor and rotten and torn-up and needs replacement. Does have an Electric pump for the top in there untouched - but I have never messed with it – or tried it.
SuspensionLooks like the previous owner put in a lot of new bushings, shocks and many new suspension parts. I believe the whole brake system is new with the exception of the Brake Booster. I replaced everything for the E-brakes and the rear drum brakes components and I believe all the lines, hoses, master cylinder and components were replaced. Brakes are all power – but, all four are drum brakes. Brakes work but are a little sketchy. Pedal seems fair and works - but I would not trust them until they get further checking or testing. I believe the front coil springs were replaced. Car sits too high in the front. Springs might settle and sink in time . I added some shackles to raise the rear for now. Otherwise, I highly recommend replacing the rear leaf springs to achieve stock or a more balanced height. Car sits on some nice 14” Rally 2 wheels and nice lettered tires with excellent tread. Not sure if they are 6” wide rims or 7” wide.
InteriorCar has original black interior mostly. Have original 1968 door panels and seats and a 1969 Console. Rear convertible inner side panels are fail. Driver seat has rips and some wear but overall it looks pretty doggone good for 40+ years. Dash pad is a reproduction and carpet is new. I added heavy metal backed thick jute carpet padding for noise and heat reduction. I bought or replaced many dash parts and stuff but much restoration is still needed. Glass front windshield is new but all the sides are good and original. Shifter is original 68 or 69 Firebird shifter but needs minor trim and the top knob parts.
ElectricalNot too much hooked up or working electrically. Has a fair looking fuse box and most of the wiring is there, fair and present. Not too much cut or spliced or messed with. About all that is hooked up and working right now is the ignition switch. Electrical system is very simple and basic on these cars. I just have not spent too much time with any of the electrical stuff yet.
Over allCar needs some work and restoration and has some age and wear and tear but drives fair and the engine and drive train work good. I have driven up and down the block but not very far. I highly suggest getting the car towed or trailored until it is checked out completely by the new owner. It still needs some work, parts, restoration, tweaking and getting the bugs out. Unproven Brakes are the biggest issue. Not sure I would take a chance driving it very far…yet. Missing lots of parts like trim, chrome, window seals, grill parts, headlight parts, brackets, hardware, mouldings and lots of minor parts.
