When BMW comes out with new models,they\'re really new. And you\'d better believethat they\'re better than the old onesIT WAS THE SAME as RollsRoyce saying they had a brandnew car ready for the public. Brandnew from the ground up. You don’texpect radical changes in a companylike Rolls Royce. You expect slow, evolutionary type changes.Ditto BMW. The Bavarian MotorWorks have been building fine, un-compromising, technically perfectmotorcycles since 1923 that are re-knowned the world over for engi-neering excellence. Sure, they’ve *changed things through the years, mostly to improve durability orsmoothness. But they’ve neverchanged anything fast, like bang-bang. Instead, they’ve always takenthe slow but sure path toward tech-nical excellence. They wanted to besure each piece was right before theyliung it on one of their bikes. And that route has paid off. To-day, BMW has an unmatched rep-utation for building the most dur-able, smoothest, quietest, most re-fined and advanced motorcycles inthe world. So what happened? They wentand dumped all their time-provenmodels for a whole line of new bikesthat BMW itself describes as “new, modern, sporty, hot.” They’ve gotso much confidence in the new mod-els that they’ve even built a newplant in Berlin to produce them.BMW doesn’t want to just hold theirpresent market. They want to ex-pand it considerably.Even if you didn’t read any othermagazine except this one, you’dknow what was happening to themotorcycle scene today. The super-bike is happening. The superbike. Abike with fierce acceleration, goodcrusing ability, comfort and out ofsight styling. That\'s what today’sbuyer wants. And there are plentyof bike manufacturers both here, inEurope and in Japan that can supplyhim with what he wants. As you can guess, the old BMWsjust didn’t make it here. Sure theywere smooth and reliable and quiet. But they were ugly and slow andfat. That just couldn’t cut it.So BMW went to work on a newline and we think you’ll like the re-sults. We spent a day at a specialpreview showing of the new models, riding them and photographing-them. And we can definitely digthem. The new lineup consists of threeseries, each with their own modeldesignations and displacements. Thethree models are the R5O/5, theR60/5 and the R75/5. The R5O/5carries a 500cc engine putting out36 horsepower. The R60/5 displaces600cc and churns 46 horses. And thebig gun, the R75/5 pumps 57 horsesfrom its 750cc.The new, sportier look of theBMWs will catch your eye immedi-ately. The larger tank, the narrowerfenders, the telescopic forks and theshorter wheelbase give the newseries a more compact, powerfulappearance. Substantial savings in...
