Disney Dollar Story

Disney Dollars: Produced between 1987 and 2014 by the Walt Disney Company, they looked a lot like U.S. dollars, but with the image of Mickey or Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Pluto, Goofy, or Dumbo rather than Washington, Lincoln, Hamilton or Franklin. They even came with anti-counterfeiting features: microprinting, tough-to-scan reflected ink, serial numbers, bits of glitter scattered about, and the authorization of Treasurer Scrooge McDuck.

Although the Disney Company stop issuing these notes in xxxx they are still accepted at the Disneyland, Walt Disney World, on Disney Cruise Line ships, the Disney Store, or even parts of Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island in the Bahamas. You’d be wiser to pay in real dollars instead as Disney Dollars today are in high demand from collector and command a price far higher than their face value.

Disney produced 172 varieties in denominations from $1 to $50, although the collection value today has no relation to the original trading value.

About this note (Disney Dollar)

This 1987 Disney Dollar is the original A Series sold in Disneyland. There were 3 series issued in the first year of production (1987). The first series (this bill) contained the mistake on the top right front side which is printed with “ MAY BE USED AS LEGAL TENDER ONLY AT DISNEYLAND” The dollars could be used in both Disneyland and Disney World but the 1st series (serial numbers beginning with A), contained this phrase This This minting error was fixed in the second issued (aka Type 2 A*****A Series) to include the expansion of the Disney Dollar to use as legal tender atWalt Disney World. The corrected bills now read “MAY BE USED AS LEGAL TENDER ONLY AT DISNEYLAND AND WALT DISNEY WORLD”

This first printing consisted of only 870,000 $1 bills and 176,000 $5 bills. They were printed by DPI Printers in Battlecreek, Michigan, United States and Engraved by the U.S. Banknote Corporation. The second series the (1987A), released at both parks, stated on the bill "May be used as legal tender only at Disneyland and Walt Disney World". Additionally, the type of paper was changed to “unwater marked” so that it would be more resistant in Florida’s climate. The Serial number also added the “A” on the end.

The bill in this listing is 1st Series, First Day Issue Series 1987 - Disneyland, May 5, 1987. Serial number format A*******.
