ANTIQUE PRE CIVIL WAR 1858 HAND STITCHED SIGNATURE QUILT ~ BUTTERMILK FALLS NY:

This dates pre-Civil War 1858, and as you can see would need an expert to properly preserve this as some of the fabric has deteriorated over the years. Each square is signed by a different person, and a couple are signed also with the destination Buttermilk Falls NY. Each square measures 8 1/4" x 8 3/4" and there is a border around them, so the total size measures 92" wide X 82". The following are the signatures on each square:Julia 58, Hattie A Hathaway March 1858, Aunt Frank 58', Frank 58, M. Wardrop 58, Ma's 58, Amelia 58, J. Lahey 58, Will Johnston March 1858, Mrs Cauldwell 58, James M Gardiner April 29th 58, Chas Smith 58, Jim Smith 58, Jessie 58, Ella Buckingham 58, Lydea A Birdsall Feb 11 1858, Marie V Nelson Buttermilk Falls NY, Cousin Isabel Buttermilk Falls 58, Charles Stewart 21st April 1858, Maria 58 and written on her square is this poem:Sweet though when death hathRudely sweptFamiliar ones we cherish yetto count these simple tokens givenas emblems dear of those in Heaven.Other names Mrs Buckingham 58', Maria Birdsall Feb 11, 1858, J Ostrander 58, Martha Parcy Buttermilk Falls 58, (can't read first name) Johnston 58, Ida 58, one I can't read, John Deckon, also written on it:Here is one block reserved for mefrom all its sweet memorials freeApril 1st 58One reads:When my patchwork days have endedand thou art wooed & wedand this poor block is blendedwith the rest upon thy bedo wher'er thy head aofferethIn happiness or careWhat'er a fate betidethMay it speak a brothers' prayersigned Walter March 30th 58
