Here from one of the Convents we work with in Europe isan antique bronze pilgrimage statue acquired at the St. Mang\'s Fussen Abbeyover 100 years ago, as protection for diseases and dangers encountered bypilgrims on their journey. The antique St. Benedict Statue is 2.25 inches longand weighs 35 grams of solid bronze. These pieces were cast at the Abbeyfoundry by the Benedictine monks to raise funds for their community, (thebronze foundry was closed in the last century). The ring above the monk\'s headwas made to fit the leather straps use to wear these rare pieces around theneck. This tradition of cast bronze statues of St. Benedict continues at theKylemore Abbey in Connemara, Co. Galway, West of Ireland.

This medals dating can be confirmed on pages 2 & 3 ofthe book AN INTRODUCTION TO RELIGIOUS MEDALS, by Bob Forrest, and published byNUMISMATICA INTERNATIONAL in 200 4. In addition, this book has chapters(outlined in the table of contents), describing each of the categories ofmedals, their possible place of pilgrimage (acquisition), and origin of themint where they were made. We recommend that anyone serious about collectingmedals from this period, acquire a copy of this book.
