Restoration
I bought this lamp from an estate sale with its cord broken, felt base raggedy, and finish flaking off.
I replaced all the electrical lamp components (cord, socket, hardware) with new ones that I personally wired and tested.
I replaced the base felt while preserving the original maker sticker that reads “The Original Armor Bronze Corporation New York City ARMOR BRONZE”.
Almost all the paint (over 90%) is original rather than my touch-up work. I did touch ups with acrylic paint matched closely to the original color.
After touch ups, I applied a few all-over coats of Mod Podge matte sealant to the entire lamp surface to prevent further chipping. I finished with a polyurethane matte varnish, which will preserve the finish for years to come.
The 3W bulb flickers like a lit candle, adding a striking, dramatic flare to the Viking’s sea journey.
Condition Notes
In order to replace the felt base, I had to cut back some of the bronze clad material that extended from the waves onto the base. As a result, there are some gaps between that original bronze shell and the new felt — see the last 2 pics. These are only noticeable when the lamp is upside down, so do not affect how it looks displayed.
Some of the metal on the mast has worn off (pic 13) and I can’t get it to screw in up to top thread (pic 12) but it is nevertheless anchored securely.
Finally, the part of the socket that holds the bulb is a little loose in its metal base so if you try to pick it up by that part or if you pull at it, it will come out. The fix is simply popping it back in. It does not affect the integrity of the wiring or the lamp’s function whatsoever.
