Indo/Persian Tulwar sword with traditional iron hilt and slightly curved blade, Estimated age: 1800’s-Early 1900’s
Tulwar fighting sword. The Tulwar was used by Muslim adversaries from Persia, Iran, Afghanistan and Northern India. It was both a cavalry and infantry weapon. The Tulwar had historically been the quintessential combat sword due to its superior handling while mounted on horseback. With a curved blade optimized for cutting and slashing with sweeping cuts delivered from the shoulder by a horseman without the danger of the blade getting stuck in bone or armor. It allowed for fierce slashing on all sides cutting through enemy formations while mounted on horseback. The sheaths were made with two very thin wood plates, covered in fabric, which explains their short life and absence here. This particular tulwar has a hand forged curved steel blade, and steel handle with a disk shaped pommel. Overall length 34 1/2". Blade shows signs of use, in good condition.
**Please note this was purchased from an estate sale, at some point someone tried to “smooth” a small portion of the blade, as pictured, it would seem to eliminate the hammered steel look. Luckily they quickly stopped and left the remaining in original condition. Since most swords when mounted on a wall only show one side, this does little in taking away from the overall look and beauty of this antique. It does add one more layer to the rich history connected to the sword.
