Antique Wedgwood Jasperware
Blue Colored Covered Biscuit Barrel
Silverplate Lid

For Your Greek Mythology, Jasperware or Wedgwood Pottery A beautiful antique blue Wedgwood lidded biscuit barrel having hoop handle. The barrel has a round footed base with a bulging bottom supporting straight rising sides ending in a metal ring along the top rim. The metal ring is fitted with a hope handle and a lid. We believe the metal ring, the handle, and the lid are all silverplated metal and they are currently tarnished. The exterior of the barrel is decorated with raised white Neoclassical relief decoration. The decorations depict gods, angels, people, and horses. There is upside down plants in a repeating pattern on the bulging bottom of the piece. The silverplate round lid has what looks like a series of English silver hallmarks, which we are unable to decipher. The lid has a central finial and the lid sits securely on the ledge of the silverplate ring affixed to the rim of the piece. The is colored in a nice blue coloration with the base being white, round with a foot. The base has the markings "WEDGWOOD" and two additional characters, which we cannot identify, impressed into it. This is a nice old and highly decorative Jasperware biscuit barrel or cookie jar with a nice color and a beautiful decorative motif on the sides. It would make a nice addition to any collection or as a great gift for the avid collector of Wedgwood. Please carefully view photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

  • Date: Uncertain but the markings suggest the piece was made in the late 1800s.
  • Origin: England
  • Size: The pieces measure ~4 1/8" in diameter at the base, ~5" in diameter at the top, is ~6" at its widest including the two pivots of the handle, and is ~5 3/4" high to the top of the finial. The jar weighs slightly over 2 pounds and 4 ounces.
  • Maker: Wedgwood.
  • Marks: Stamped on the bottom of the base with the markings "WEDGWOOD" and two additional characters, which we cannot identify. See photos for additional details.
  • Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice old piece of blue Wedgwood in good condition having beautiful and vivid colors, which would make a great addition to your Wedgwood pottery collection.
  • Condition: The biscuit barrel or cookie jar is in very good condition with no breaks, hairlines, chips, or repairs. The metal lid and the metal ring with the handle are all in very good condition with minimum scratches but no objectionable dings. They appear to be silver-plated and are tarnished. They would probably benefit from a good polishing to bring them to their original beauty. The piece is lightly soiled especially along the foot or the edge of the base. The piece has a few of the common defects you would expect ion an old piece of Wedgwood Jasperware pottery such as pops, spots where the coloring did not fully flow, and uneven spots where the surface may have a few bubbles. This piece has a minimum number of such defects and they are mostly on the bulging bottom portion of the piece. Be that as it may, this is a very nice old piece worthy of a spot in your collection. Please see photos to appreciate the beauty of the bowl and for additional condition information.
