In a sense, Mrs Nickleby is the villain of the novel Nicholas Nickleby - an unstoppable chatterbox who is wrong about absolutely everything. Very clearly a portrait of - and to some degree a revenge on - Dickens' mother, she might be well meaning and love her children, but is in fact a distracted, garrulous and rather silly woman. She fails to appreciate the dangers that will face Nicholas and his sister Kate, doing little if nothing to prepare them for life's adversities, while naively thinking that all will turn out for the best.
