CIVIL WAR GENERAL MONTGOMERY MEIGS MILITARY MILITIA 1864: $225.00
During the 1864 att3mpt by Confederate General Jubal Early to capture the City of Washington, DC, a number of civilian militias were formed to defend the City. Union Quartermaster General Montgomery Meigs organized the Home Guards to defend Washington during Early\'s Raid. The Guard consisted of over 5,000 militia, QM Dept clerks and disabled soldiers who aided in the defense of Fort Stevens, July, 1864, preparing the post for the arrival of the 6th Corps. An original Civil War Order printed with the logo of \"Head Quarters 2nd Regt. Meigs Guard, Organized Employees Quartermaster\'s Department, Washington, D.C. \" dated Sept 19th, 1864 Ordering commissioned and noncommissioned officers to meet on parade grounds Sept 21 for a :Skeleton Battalion Drill\". The Order is issued by Command of Colonel E.C. Camp, and signed by his Adjutant, J.W. Shields. The 1 p 8 x 11P ptd/ink Order is printed on paper bearing a large watermark of a Federal eagle clutching arrows and olive branches, above crossed lance and banner. It is signed on reverse Elijah Parker, US Sexton and dated 1884. Minor age stains, edge wear, Overall VG. US Army Brevet Colonel Elijah Ely Camp was Assistant Quartermaster General serving under General Meigs until his death in 1867. Minor edge wear, age stains, Overall VG.
