Candlesticks - Rare Pair of Fine Latten Candlesticks c.1650: $325.00
Offered for your consideration is this rare, matching pair of English latten candlesticks, circa 1650. These fine examples of the metalworker's craft measure 5-1/2" tall and display octagonal columns, slightly elongated, unpierced sockets and square, "untrimmed" bases measuring 5-5/8" in diameter. As with most candlesticks of this date, these examples are of two-piece construction with the column terminating in a hand-threaded tang which screws into the base. In the case of this pair, these two parts have at some early date been soldered together, but as the photos show, this has not affected the appearance nor the soundness of the candlesticks. One candlestick is in museum-quality condition; its mate shows evidence of a contemporary (or very early) yet acceptable plugged repair to one side of the column approx. 1/2" square, as well as a thinly-cut section from one of the rims of the base measuring 1-1/2" wide. Both candlesticks display a wonderful, matching, untouched patina. As is per usual, neither display maker's marks. To reference three examples nearly identical to this pair, see Ronald F. Michaelis' "Old Domestic Base-Metal Candlesticks" (1997), pp. 98-99, figs. 140 and 144. To find candlesticks of this exceptionally early age is rare (singles ones at shows sell for upwards of $500; to find a matching pair unseparated after 370 years is almost a miracle!
