Civil War Pictorial History, Hundreds of Period Illustrations, c.1895 F. Leslie?:
$40.00

Civil War Pictorial History, Hundreds of Period Illustrations of civil war scenes, battles, officers, officials, etc. This is a collection of disbound pages from an unknown publication, lacking a title page or copyright information, that resembles and contains many of the same images as Frank Leslie's various publications from the Civil War period. The page headers read "The Civil War in the United States" but I have been unable to determine what the source document is. Artists include F. B. Schell, Edwin Forbes, H. Lovie, Surgeon J. E. Trexler, J. E. Taylor, C. E. H. Bonwill, and many others. The publication date is probably 1885 or shortly after. Evidence for this is that one of the images is of the rock where Stonewall Jackson fell, and the caption reads "Chancellorsville, VA -- the battlefield in 1885." Another is of the Confederate Monument [Magnolia Cemetery] in Charlottesville SC., which was erected in 1879. And another shows a family at a graveside and the caption reads "Thirty years after."The first page in this collection is numbered 35, and the last is 526. Some of the pages in between are missing. A few signatures are intact but most are completely loose. Page size is about 16-1/2 by 11-1/4.Please see the pictures for more information and detail as to contents and condition.
