Amazing Civil War & Historical Photograph!
Prisoners from the Union Army suffered through a living hell at the Confederate Libby Prisonin Richmond, Virginia. Unionists and other political prisoners would endure a living horror at the Confederate Castle Thunder Prison, also in Richmond. While they were there, these prisoners might just have run into "Hero," the Russian Bloodhound the Confederates used to guard the grounds. Hero is said to have weighed 198 pounds and stand three feet two inches tall and over seven feet long! He was brought to America in 1859 from Russia as a fighting dog but was transitioned into a guard dog for the two prisons mentioned above.
