This autobiography of Ulysses S. Grant, who was the leading northern general

of the Civil War, features his military career during the Mexican-American War,

which he did not believe in, and the Civil War. It is considered by many historians

to be the best account of the Civil War ever written.

Grant wrote this during his last year and it was published by Samuel Clemens

(Mark Twain), his close personal friend. One of Twain’s successful promotional

strategies was to have Civil War veterans sell subscriptions to it door-to-door.

Grant’s writing style is straightforward and perceptive as he describes both his

battles against the Confederacy and his personal army foes.

He wrote these two volumes, assisted by Twain’s editing, in the final years of his

life as he battled throat cancer. He died five days after completing the manuscript.

This first edition, in the publisher’s deluxe binding, has two steel engravings on

the front and back of each volume. Condition is very good, especially considering

that these are 137 year old books.

There are three marginal smudges on the inside of Volume I. The other minor wear

and imperfections can be seen in the photos. Spines are intact and not loose.

There are some maps in Volume II and a fold out sheet of letters as well as an ivory

fold-out.
