As a young law clerk, the future President attests that he has served a summons. Signed twice as \"S. Grover Cleveland\"! A very rare variant!
Manuscript document double signed \"S. Grover Cleveland\", 1p, 6x8. Also signed: \"Albert W. Bishop\" as Commissioner of Deeds. Buffalo, 1856 March 11. In the case of The Michigan Southern Rail Road Company against Ansel R. Cobb & Nelson Willard, 18-year-old Stephen Grover Cleveland swears, in full: \"S. Grover Cleveland of the City of Buffalo being duly sworn says, that on the fifth of February 1856 at the City of Buffalo in the County of Erie he served a copy of the annexed summons upon Ansel R. Cobb one of the defendants in the action, by delivering the same to, and leaving the same with, the said defendant personally. And this deponent further says that he knew the person so served, to be the person mentioned and described in the said summons as one of the defendants therein.\" Both Cleveland signatures are on the same page. Attached to this document are related documents. The three sheets are attached at top with glue and green string. Two of the accompanying documents bear the pre-printed law firm name \"Bowen & Rogers/Plaintiff\'s Attorneys\"; the third is signed: \"Dennis Bowen/Plff Atty\". The future 22nd and 24th U.S. President had planned to settle in Cleveland, Ohio because of its name. However, after stopping in Buffalo, New York to visit his mother\'s uncle, STEPHEN GROVER CLEVELAND (1837-1908) worked for him for six months and decided to become a lawyer. Before being admitted to the bar in 1859, Cleveland worked as a clerk in the law office of Bowen & Rogers and studied there. He filled out and signed the document offered here with his rare, early signature: \"S. Grover Cleveland\". He dropped the \"S.\" shortly thereafter. ALBERT W. BISHOP (1832-1901) has signed as Commissioner of Deeds, an official under New York law who certifies official documents. Bishop was a Union veteran of the Civil War, rising to Brigadier General and serving from 1864 to 1868 as Adjutant General of Arkansas. Thereafter he returned to his native Buffalo to practice law. ½-inch diameter seal affixed. Lightly creased, lightly stained at top edges from ribbon. Slight separation at folds. Overall, fine condition.See more material from these signers:PRESIDENT GROVER CLEVELAND ALBERT W. BISHOP See more listings in our PRESIDENTIAL (1,936) category.
