♠J. C. Tatum grew up inGrapevine, Texas. He voluntarily enlisted in the Marines onJune 23, 1941.
♠ J. C. was a Scout Sniper andRifleman inCompany "I", 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines of the 2nd Marine Division.
♠J. C. fought on Guadalcanal for three months, from November 4, 1942 - February 9, 1943. He later suffered from war injuries of scarred lacerations covering his right arm, a noticeable scar protruding from his left eyebrow, and an unsightly eight-inch scar on his left thigh. These, plus a tropical ailment, would leave him with a physical disability at only 21 years old.
♠As a Scout Sniper, in his own words, J. C. “ambushed four Japs coming up a trail and when they came into my sights I used up a full clip of 20 bullets on them and all four fell like cattle that had been hit on the head with an ax.”
