Graphic Wooden Display Crate, Paper Color Labels, Allison's "Death on Dirt" Soap For Sale

Beautiful wood shipping box for Allisons Death onDirt Soap, Middletown, Connecticut. Box measures 15.5” x 10.5” x 6” and has theoriginal color paper labels on the front, back, sides, and inside of the lid (5labels total). The box is notdovetailed, but is constructed with old nails which are still in place. Theshipping box doubled as a display box which would have sat on the counter in anearly general or country store with the lid open and the bars of Allisons Deathon Dirt soap on display (box originally held 36 bars of soap). All five labelsfeature an identical image of a two well-dressed Victorian women (appears to bea mother and daughter) with a tub of soapy water and a bar of Death on Dirtsoap. Great early household scene with a tea kettle inthe background and an elegant gas light overhead. The labels also include guarantees (“$100 ifit will not do all we claim for it”) and claims (“Not a Catch Penny Compound –A Pure Soap”).

All of the labels show toning from age, staining,soiling, wear, and portions missing.Each label is at least 90% complete and the box looks colorful andimpressive on display. The box has several cracks and splits (one glue repair to front panel) but is overall solid with nowarping of the box or lid. The lid isdetached from the box (the original leather “hinges” are still attached to lidand box, see last photo) and there are two very old fabric straps that were used to hold thelid open that could possibly be reattached.I had this box on display in a bedroom and simply leaned it against awall and propped the lid in place for display (as seen in photos). Great early general store advertising displaybox.
