BORIS KARLOFF "INFORMATION PLEASE # 11

16mm black and white sound on 1943 Kodak stock. About 390 feet (approximately 10 minutes). From the RKO Radio Pictures short subject series of the popular radio show hosted by Clifton Fadiman.

Don't scoff. This one of a kind rarity seldom turns up on film sale lists. Too good to let go. Radio shows like this simply don't exist anymore.

Guests for this edition, released July 11th 1941, include:
Boris KARLOFF, Oscar LEVANT (composer, musician, humourist), Franklin P. ADAMS noted columnist known for his wit), and John KIERAN author, naturalist, journalist).

Levant is, as always, delightfully amusing; and it’s so great to see and hear Karloff relaxed and intimate . . . Literary fun and games. A joy. See footnote*.

In this entry, Fadiman commences with questions about real and fictional murders. Next is to identify the titles of songs and nursery rhymes, which are acted out by, among others, Master Ted Donaldson (then eight years old) who later appeared in ‘A Tree Grows In Brooklyn” “Mr. Winkle Goes To War” and the Rusty & Pal doggie adventures.

READ CAREFULLY:

Original print, on 1943 Kodak stock. Well used; has some issues. Fortunately, none of any major consequence.

Print is Free of Vinegar Syndrome.

With the exception of 5 splices and some nicked sprocket holes during the main title sequence (about 10 feet) the balance of the print is free of damage and splices. Dirt accumulation on the start of the main title - about 15 inches - is easily removed with film cleaner, and with patience.

Also during the initial 25 feet, there are three isolated consecutive double frame spots expanded by heat (not burnt frames). These need to be removed - amounting to omitting two frames each. The results using good quality splicing tape (from a roll) should go unnoticed.

The next approximately 175 feet reflects some on-screen marks and scratches imposed on the print by the claw mechanism as the footage passed through the film gate behind the lens. Fortunately this footage escaped major damage and the effect is fleeting. The balance of the print - about 190 feet - is free of physical and visual Impairments. Some minute orange dots due to chemical change are visible - fairly common with ancient prints - and won't be noticed if transferred to a black and white format.

With apologies if my footage count is slightly off.

The last shot is host Fadiman offerding the viewer adieu. Notice my image of this very shot includes the 'cue marks' in the upper right hand corner. In the theatre, the cue marks instruct the projectionist to switch projectors when he sees the second set of 'cue marks'. There are only a few feet from the first 'cue marks' to the very end of the print - hence we know this edition of "Information Please" is virtually complete. No end title.

I believe I have covered all major points on the print. Questions: Please don’t hesitate to contact me. I have not sought to repair the few old splices and nicked (but not torn) sprocket holes, or given the print a thorough cleaning and lubrication. I no longer have the luxury of free time. Besides I would rather the buyer enjoy the process of preserving this rarity . . . and it is a real rarity and worth the attention given its pleasures and rewards.Transfer to digital format to preserve in your archive.

All of the film frame images are by me.

SOLD ‘as is’. Well worth Archival Restoration. I only know of one other (different) episode that was once available and that was years ago.

Enquiries Welcome.

PS: With the exception of the initial 20 odd feet (in need of repairs noted) the balance runs nicely through my Ampro and B&H Specialist and a 385. For the novice, best not use an auto-thread projector - even after footage is given a thorough cleaning, lubrication and repairs.
